Holland

We headed to Holland on Friday afternoon to spend time with dear ones before heading west. Michelle, my old Albion roommate for three years, has been living in Holland since she and Korey got married in December--yay! It was so great to catch up with Michelle and get to know Korey a bit better.


Later that night Rose, Robert, Goose and I walked around the corner from my parents' place to Century Lanes for some cosmic bowling. Why haven't we thought of doing this together before? It was great fun and I bowled my highest game ever--169!

More farewells...

Jenn and Nate had us over for a New Sanctuary Coalition send-off. It was a gorgeous, windy night in Hyde Park and we very much enjoyed being out on Jenn's patio. The food was amazing and it was great, as always, to see these folks!

Heading back to our place proved to be an adventure. Oh, CTA, how dear you are and yet how you vex me.

We had plenty of time for chatting at the Madison and Wabash stop. Eric and Mike (who lives in Pasadena and is on his way to a wedding) had come right to Jenn's from the airport, so he could use his suitcase for a bench--or a horsey.

He would be a good bouncer.

Farewells...

We hosted our last community meal on Monday and for our special dessert, we invited our friends to take us out for ice cream! You wouldn't guess it by this picture, but Mark was the first to get his cone and Eric the last. Mark was still had ice cream outside the cone when we got back to our place--after a slow, 3 block walk.


Yesterday evening, we headed up to our old neighborhood--Rogers Park! Erin, Matt and Skylar had us over for a bit, which was so nice.

Skylar is so chunkly and cute.


Only a few blocks away from the Myslenski's is our old street--Eastlake Terrace! Andy and Lewis had us over for a BBQ and Euchre. Look at this feast!


As always, it was an intense game...

But...

On the town

On the way to a show last night, we stopped by the Long Room for a bit and got to see Jason, brother Scott's long-time friend. Jason is a co-owner and only there every other week, so we were lucky to catch him. He approached us from the other end of the room (which is actually pretty long) and said, "I'd recognize a Conklin head from a mile away."

You Chicagoans may recognize Jason from Chicago Magazine's special on the city's 20 most eligible single people of 2007. Here's his profile and a classic from his photo shoot--pretty great.

From the Long Room we headed to Uncommon Ground where we, at long last, saw Ryanhood in concert--they were so great! Abby's husband, on the left, is the Ryan-half of the duo.


Lewis met us there and I was also so excited to see Jessie, one of my roommates at Albion, who is living in Chicago this year while she finishes her Doctorate in Psychology. Abby, Ryan, Lewis, Jessie, Gooseman, me:



It was fun to see Abby and Ryan again after less than a week! Last Sunday, they hosted some folks from my Mexico delegation/Migrant Trail Walk after we finished our walk in Tucson. It was so great to see where they live while not on tour!


On a side note, we've also been enjoying Pop's Malt Shop, a new establishment that just opened up a block from our house. They have dangerously good Moose Tracks! The cone they gave me was so huge that I had to give it to Eric to finish. He did not complain.


A few days later, while Goose was at camp, I invited Trent and Jeanne to visit Pop's with me :) I'm definitely going to take advantage of our proximity to good ice cream while I still can!

Journeying

Mira here. I'm back after two weeks in Mexico and on the US/Mexico border (see my trip blog, LaTravesiaDeMira.blogspot.com for more on this and to see pictures) and Eric is off at camp for summer staff training.

At the moment, life feels a bit crazy, but good changes are in the works. In about two weeks, we leave for Cornelius, Oregon where we will begin new positions in the United Methodist Church. Between now and then, we will be finishing up our many jobs, packing up our stuff, making final moving plans and visiting with people. Leaving our Chicago and Michigan communities is difficult for us, but we feel ready for the change. It feels like a good move.

Ann and Brody checked out Cornelius for us earlier this week and sent us this picture of what will be our new home--yay! It's so cute.


An, just for smiles, here's a picture of my mom looking through the window of a friend's doll house. It kind of looks like the girl on the bed is hiding from the scary giant!

Here’s a letter I wrote to Bloomington, IL’s Pantagraph editor as an open letter to Senator Bill Brady, a leading GOP gubernatorial candidate, regarding his proposed policies for making gay marriage fundamentally illegal in the state of Illinois. By the way, out of respect to the newspaper, I opted to keep their outside link at the bottom--so to keep reading the entire letter, simply follow that link.

I encourage you to read more about Sen. Brady's policies on your own and to be encouraged by many of the intelligent and thoughtful responses generated by this letter, while also taking note of the lack of those qualities in some of the other responses. I wasn't able to include the picture in my original letter, but below is the image you may or may not be familiar with. Each time I see it, I feel sickened for Elizabeth Eckford and how much courage she must have had, as a high school student, to walk through those hostile crowds. We should be so blessed to have a tenth of her courage today...

An open letter to Sen. Bill Brady: Dear Sen. Bill Brady, I have recently seen again the classic picture of Little Rock, Ark. resident Elizabeth Eckford, stoically entering her newly desegregated high school, in spite of Hazel Massery, who was shouting rage-fully at Eckford.

When I look at this now, I am reminded of the current civil rights issue against which you take a strong stand, GLBT rights. By preventing people from pursuing loving, monogamous and legal marriages, do you see yourself in Hazel in this picture?

Batch-in' It...but ready for Mira's Return

Eric here. It has been just over a week since Mira left for Oaxaca. It's amazing what anxieties make themselves known once the person you love has left on such an amazing journey! I feel great because I just got off the phone with her from her cell phone, which is the first time since she has left that she has been able to use it--and the last time until her arrival in Tucson. Today (in fact as I write this) Mira and the rest of the smaller initial delegation are crossing back into the United States to participate in the Migrant Trail Walk. They will then cross back into Mexico and begin their 75 mile walk through the desert from near Sáric (Sasabe, Sonora, Mexico doesn't show up on the map), completing the 7 day journey in Tucson, AZ. Here is a link to what their journey may look like, more or less. While there is certainly an element of risk in such a journey, the members of this larger delegation (60 folks or so) will have plenty of food, water, and support vehicles accompanying them along the entire way. I know that many are concerned, as I am, about her safety, so in learning more about this myself, I have found this site to be quite helpful: http://www.mcc.org/us/washington/issues/immigration/walk/what.html.

It is comforting than knowing that Mira will be accompanied by lots of Mennonites! Keep up those good thoughts and prayers for the many whose lives will be transformed into powerful and positive agents of change.

In the meantime, I have been doing some of the packing we need to do before we make our way out to Oregon, and seeing some friends from the Blind Faith Cafe, Joseph Marshak, my Holy Covenant men's group, Tony Didato, the Community Meal group that meets on Mondays, and of course, wrapping up my time at both Outdoor and Retreat Ministries and Glenview UMC. It has been great to keep all those connections going, knowing that all are in great hands!

Surprise!

Trent and Jeanne invited us over for "dinner" and when we showed up, lots of my Starbucks friends were there for a farewell party! All kinds of tasty stuff was cooked on the grill and we hung out in the yard for a bit, even though the evening was *unseasonably* cool (what does "seasonal" mean anymore, really?).


Inside, it was a bit warmer. Juan, Gia, Jeanne, Gooseman, Skylar, Amber, Max and Trent.

The Mira Special, a pie Skylar made in honor of my favorite drinks, which all include coffee, soymilk and caramel. Skylar has a reputation for making scrumptious pies and this one did not disappoint.


Though I will not miss leaving home before the sun rises each morning, I will dearly miss my Starbucks friends.

Our friends Susan and Kate gifted us some Cubs tickets and, though the Cubbies lost to the Padres on a dreary night, we had a great time!

Apartment-warming

Garrett friends April and Vince moved here from Detroit a few months back and had some folks over yesterday to celebrate their new home, which happens to be in Rogers Park, our old neighborhood.
